Superior HIP Technology

HOT ISOSTATIC PRESSES

A Leader in HIP Innovation & Dependability

For more than 30 years American Isostatic Presses has led the industry in developing cutting edge hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technology. AIP has never had a failure of any pressure system we’ve installed. Our customers in industries like aerospace, defense, medical, and manufacturing rely on our engineering expertise for reliable HIP systems that stand the test of time and perform well under intense pressure.

Benefits of Hot Isostatic Pressing

HIP technology is a component-forming process used to uniformly densify containerized shapes in metal, ceramic, and plastic at high temperatures. With typical pressures from 1,035 to 2,070 bar (15,000 to 30,000 psi) and temperatures up to 2,000°C (4,000°F), HIP can achieve 100% of maximum theoretical density for high-performance applications, improving the ductility and fatigue resistance of critical materials. Common applications for HIP include defect healing of castings, consolidation of powder metal and ceramic parts or diffusion bonding.

A LEADING HIP PRODUCT FROM OUR LINE

AIP52-15H hot isostatic press. This large production sized system features an 1100mm dia. x 2500mm long hot zone at 103MPa.

How Does HIP Work?

During Hot Isostatic Pressing, pressure is applied to a material uniformly from all directions through an inert gas (usually Argon) in a pressurized vessel. Heat is applied to the containment chamber throughout the process to increase this pressure over time. The inert gas ensures that no chemical reaction occurs with the material during the process. The application of both heat and pressure simultaneously on all surfaces of a material helps to eliminate any small gaps (pores) in the material thus increasing density and uniform composition.

Why choose Hot Isostatic Pressing?

HIP allows us to squeeze the porous impurities out of materials in order to improve a number of material characteristics. In sintering (powder metallurgy), for example, the process compresses the volume of metal powder at such high pressures and temperatures, that through a combination of deformation, creep, and diffusion bonding you actually create a completely homogenous annealed microstructure with minimal or no impurities in the material. This improves the product’s density, static strength, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance
